What is a VPS or VDS?

A Virtual Private Server (VPS), also known as a Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS), is a virtual machine sold as a service by an Internet hosting provider. A VPS runs its own copy of an operating system, and customers have superuser-level access to this operating system instance, allowing them to install any software compatible with the OS.
